Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has offered a mixed review of Ronald Araújo’s upcoming transfer from Barcelona.
The pundit acknowledged the centre-back's clear strengths but questioned whether this is the right long-term signing for the club.
The Uruguayan has arrived in England for a medical examination, after which the Reds will complete a season-long loan deal with an option to buy next summer.
Carragher praised Araújo’s physicality, aggression, and versatility.
“Araújo is a physical beast, aggressive, and he can play as a centre-back or right-back, with top-level experience. He has captained Barcelona and has played in big matches,”
he commented.
The club legend also believes the structure of the deal makes sense.
“A loan is a low-risk option. You try him for a year, see if he adapts under Iraola, and if it works, you buy him. That part makes sense. It fills a gap without blowing the budget,”
Carragher cautioned, however, that decision-making and consistency could pose problems for Araújo in England.
“Passion is great; he goes in for tackles, but defending at this level is about decision-making, concentration, and reading the game,”
he elaborated.
The pundit also flagged Araújo’s disciplinary issues and recent dip in form.
“Too often against elite teams, you can switch off, give away silly penalties, or receive red cards. The Premier League is ruthless; one mistake and they punish you. He has had problems with consistency and discipline, and his form has dropped,”
Carragher suggested that the club should target a more established player, particularly following Ibrahima Konate's move to Real Madrid.
“Liverpool should have opted for a centre-back with more experience rather than settling for a player who has always been second to 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi,”
the Englishman stated.
In conclusion, he questioned whether this transfer can truly be labelled a marquee signing.
“Arriving here on loan after being told he isn't a starter at Barcelona, he seems more of a reactive option than a star signing,”
