Daniel James is weighing up a move away from Leeds United in the January transfer window, according to Football Insider.
The club is not keen to let go of the 28-year-old winger and is willing to retain him in the squad if he agrees to a bench role.
The situation stems from Daniel Farke’s shift to a three-centre-back system, which has effectively diminished the traditional role for natural wingers within the team.
James finds himself in a tough spot
Sources suggest that James is among the players whose positions have been affected by Farke's tactical shifts.
Leeds continues to implement the 3-5-2 formation that propelled them back to the Premier League, but this system has significantly altered the requirements for attacking players.
Farke appreciates James' pace and dynamism, especially in the closing stages of matches, yet the coaching staff are unwilling to guarantee him a regular spot in the starting XI.
Competition for attacking spots
Currently, James faces stiff competition for positions alongside striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin from players like Noah Okafor, Harry Wilson, Anton Stakh and Brenden Aaronson.
In the 2024/25 season, following Leeds' promotion to the Premier League, James was directly involved in 21 goals for the team. However, since then, his importance has gradually lessened.
Just 52 minutes in the Premier League
The previous season was also challenging for the Welshman, as he only started six league matches due to injuries.
Entering the 2026/27 campaign, things have become even more difficult. In the opening five Premier League games, James has managed just 52 minutes of playing time.
Despite this, Leeds are not looking to sell the player and have no intention of forcing him out.
