Manchester United have unveiled an unusual scheme to let supporters take home a tiny piece of the famed Old Trafford pitch, and the timing of this initiative is certainly fascinating.
The club is selling small blocks of turf from the legendary stadium at a price of £125 each. Marketed as a "one-of-a-kind collectible" for true fans, these pieces measure 7 by 7 centimetres and come carefully packaged in special boxes adorned with imagery of Old Trafford.
Why has United chosen to do this now? The answer is straightforward – a brand-new playing surface has been laid at Old Trafford.
Over the summer, the club completely replaced the football pitch. The previous turf, which had served faithfully for 14 years, was removed. Instead of just disposing of it, the hierarchy at United decided to transform bits of the old grass into memorable keepsakes that fans can purchase for a handsome sum.
There's historical significance behind this idea as well. United previously sold pieces of the Old Trafford pitch when it was changed ahead of the 2012/13 season, and that venture proved immensely popular with supporters.

The size of the old Old Trafford pitch was approximately 105 by 68 metres. If each square of turf were sold separately at £125, it could theoretically yield around £182 million. However, this is merely a hypothetical figure rather than a sum United expects to earn from this promotion.
Yet the timing of this sale cannot be overlooked: United have just reported another financial loss, while simultaneously promoting plans for a new 100,000-seat stadium.
And while for fans, it may be a cherished memento, for Manchester United, this inventive approach offers a clever way to give a slice of Old Trafford a new life while helping to improve their financial standings.
