Wayne Rooney was less than pleased with Luke Shaw's actions during Manchester United's Premier League opener against Hull City. The former United captain described the defender's mistake that led to the second goal as 'schoolboy'.
Michael Carrick's side fell to a 2-0 defeat against the newly-promoted side. For the second goal, Shaw positioned himself significantly deeper than the rest of the defence, leaving Hull's entire attacking line in an advantageous position.
Rooney didn’t hold back:
It's schoolboy defending from Luke Shaw. United had a good line, but Luke dropped off and found himself about five yards behind the other defenders. Once the pass goes through, and it did perfectly, stopping the attack is almost impossible.
The whole game for United was far too passive. They sat in a mid-block and hardly put any pressure on the ball. It feels like United only regained possession in Hull's final third twice. There needs to be much more energy in their pressing and attempts to win the ball back.
He also pointed out that similar issues were evident during their pre-season match against Milan. Rooney suggested that Hull's coaching staff may have studied that game and exploited the weaknesses in Carrick's side.
