15-Second Brief
Manchester United have officially offered a contract to 16-year-old Jay Jay Gabriel, who wishes to leave the club. Now, United can secure compensation for his departure, but moving to a European club would yield only around £350,000.

Manchester United have made an effort to retain one of the most talented prospects from their academy. The club has officially offered 16-year-old Jay Jay Gabriel a youth contract, but the player is still intent on leaving.

According to The Guardian, the offer holds both sporting and financial significance for United. Had the club not presented Gabriel with a contract upon his 16th birthday, the forward would have been free to leave in January.

This means that Manchester United can now expect some form of compensation, even if the player decides to reject their offer.

If Gabriel moves to another Premier League club, the fee will be determined by a special tribunal if the parties cannot reach an agreement. It’s estimated that United could rake in over €3 million, plus a 20% cut of any future transfer fee involving the player.

However, a move abroad would see the Mancunians pocket significantly less, with compensation likely to amount to around £350,000.

This latter option now appears increasingly probable, with Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich all keeping a close eye on the young forward.

Gabriel has been with United's academy since 2022, joining when he was just 11. He was regularly training with the first team this summer and participated in pre-season friendlies.

Despite this, the player’s family and representatives have expressed dissatisfaction with how the club has managed his development, arguing that Gabriel deserves more opportunities to showcase his talent at the senior level.

It was previously reported that his entourage demanded at least 20 minutes of playing time in a Champions League match against Sabah, as well as game time in fixtures against Bournemouth and Brighton. These conditions were thought to be necessary for them to consider signing a new agreement.

Last month, Gabriel halted his training with the team and requested to have his registration in the academy nullified.

The situation is further complicated by financial demands, with reports suggesting the forward’s representatives are seeking wages exceeding €1 million a year, alongside a hefty signing bonus.

Should other clubs breach regulations in their pursuit to sign the player, United may consider legal action.

Thus, the contract offer has not brought the two sides closer to an agreement. However, should one of the academy’s brightest talents indeed leave Old Trafford, Manchester United will at least be able to secure compensation.
