Arsenal's head coach Mikel Arteta has addressed the speculation surrounding Erling Haaland's potential move from Manchester City. The Spaniard neither confirmed nor dismissed the club's interest in the Norwegian striker.
According to FootballTransfers, Arsenal are closely monitoring the situation at City and may seek to acquire Haaland in the summer of 2027, should financial sanctions force the Manchester club to part ways with their star players.
An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty of 114 financial rule breaches, and while the club has lodged an appeal, the final penalty remains undecided. Among the potential sanctions is even the possibility of expulsion from the Premier League.
Amidst this backdrop, the future of several of the team's leading talents, including Enzo Maresca, has come into question.
In an interview with The i Paper, Arteta was asked whether he would welcome Haaland at Arsenal should he become available next summer.
With a smile, the manager responded:
You understand that I can’t answer questions like that.
Sources indicate that the London club is indeed weighing up the possibility of a significant transfer. However, the race for the Norwegian is expected to be fiercely competitive, with interest also reported from Barcelona, Liverpool, and Real Madrid.
Since his move from Borussia Dortmund, Haaland has netted an impressive 169 goals in 205 appearances for Manchester City. Should the club decide to sell, the transfer fee could surpass €200 million.
At 26, the forward has yet to hint at a desire to leave, and ahead of the upcoming match against Liverpool, he urged fans to remain calm.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Haaland stated:
We need to stick together and keep a positive mindset. Whatever happens in life, we must continue to smile.
It’s important for us to look ahead, try to win matches, and enjoy football. We need to support one another and get through everything together.
The Norwegian also emphasised his strong attachment to Manchester.
He added:
This place and Britain mean a lot to me. It’s a special place for us. I love this city and its fans, as I feel like one of them and share in their experiences.
Haaland's contract with Manchester City runs until 2034, making a move unlikely without significant developments in the club's situation.
Currently, Arsenal's interest remains largely speculative, hinging on the outcomes of City's appeal and the potential sanctions they may face.
