Kai Rooney continues his journey in Manchester United's academy and is poised to sign his first professional contract. Wayne Rooney emphasises he does not want his son’s achievements attributed to his surname, and in his childhood, Kai even asked his father to refrain from attending his matches.

Kai Rooney is on the verge of an important chapter in his football career at Manchester United. The 16-year-old forward has been making strides in the U18 team, earning a scholarship with the club and standing ready to sign his first professional contract in the near future.

The path for the son of former United legend Wayne Rooney has already attracted immense scrutiny due to his illustrious surname. Wayne has been vocal about wanting his son to be assessed purely on his own merits.

He stated:

Kai wants to build his own career, and I will support him. But I don’t want him to receive a scholarship or a contract because of me.

I want him to earn it on his own.

The weight of expectation has indeed created challenges for Kai. During his youth matches, the attention surrounding Wayne was so overwhelming that Kai asked his father not to attend.

Colin Rooney shared:

Kai told Wayne not to come to his games because he was constantly surrounded by people and couldn’t fully focus on playing.

Kai simply said, 'Dad, there’s no point in you coming; you can’t see how I play anyway.'

Eventually, the situation improved, and Wayne began supporting his son more regularly, notably attending Kai's debut at Old Trafford last season.

Wayne tries to ensure that no extra pressure is placed on Kai:

He just plays football. He’s a teenager enjoying the game.

Of course, there’s more attention on him than most of his teammates, but I think he’s handling it very well.

The Rooney family has a history tied to football academies. The younger son, Kase, was involved with Everton’s youth setup but was released after the U7 team.

Wayne recounted how he calmly explained the situation to his son:

I didn’t get into Everton’s academy until I was nine. You’ve plenty of time. Just enjoy football, and the rest will come.

Kai has received a scholarship from Manchester United alongside Michael Carrick's son, Jace. Both youngsters will be eligible to sign professional contracts once they reach 17 years of age.
