Former Chelsea manager Ruud Gullit has expressed his disappointment with Liverpool's decision to sack Arne Slot. The Dutch coach recently guided the club to Premier League success in his inaugural season but was surprisingly let go after a challenging title defence.
Gullit stated:
I think Liverpool made a mistake in letting Arne Slot go.
A club like Liverpool shouldn’t foster a culture of sacking coaches just one year after they’ve won the Premier League. We see this happening at other clubs, and now it’s creeping into Liverpool as well. I’m left wondering: who is accountable for this?
He also pointed out that a flurry of expensive signings does not guarantee instant success:
They brought in all these good players, but that doesn’t mean success will come immediately. It’s far more difficult than that.
Reflecting on his own time at Chelsea, Gullit recalled:
At Chelsea, we signed Gianfranco Zola, Roberto Di Matteo, and Frank Leboeuf because I knew exactly what I wanted and which players I needed. They formed the backbone of my team. But a coach also needs a bit of luck.
Slot departed Liverpool after a tough second season, with the team suffering 20 defeats across all competitions and finishing fifth in the league. There were also concerns at the club regarding the style of play, the integration of youth players, and Slot's relationships with some senior members of the squad.
Following Slot's exit, Andoni Iraola took the reins at Liverpool.
