Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Tottenham's Micky van de Ven as they explore options to bolster their defence. With Virgil van Dijk's contract expiring in the summer of 2027, the club is starting to think about the future.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has revealed that the 25-year-old Dutchman has been on the Merseyside club's radar for quite some time:
Van de Ven is a player that Liverpool have watched for a while.
He definitely fits the criteria they’d look for in a replacement for Van Dijk. He plays on the left, is physically strong, and is now the captain of Tottenham.
Despite Tottenham's rocky start to the season, Brown highlighted the defender's individual qualities:
I do have some reservations because he has been part of a Tottenham team that has faced serious challenges. But his individual level is clear.
He meets many of the requirements. If Tottenham continues to struggle, I think the prospect of Liverpool could become appealing for him.
However, a potential transfer appears complicated. Van de Ven recently signed a five-year contract in August and was appointed captain shortly afterwards. Tottenham views the Dutch international as a key player for their long-term plans.
Last season, the defender made 45 appearances across all competitions, including 34 in the Premier League. Before this campaign, he had already racked up 96 appearances for Tottenham.
Van de Ven's speed, ability to play high up the pitch, and strong left foot make him a suitable candidate for Liverpool. Still, with a long-term contract and captaincy under his belt, Tottenham hold a strong position in any potential negotiations.
