Jamie Carragher has voiced his discontent regarding the tactics employed by Andoni Iraola in his Premier League debut for Liverpool. The Merseyside club managed to secure a 2-2 draw against Newcastle, but the hosts capitalised on Liverpool's defensive frailties during critical moments.
Newcastle took the lead thanks to Anthony Elanga, and although Cody Gakpo equalised after the break, an instant response from substitute Joe Willock saw the Magpies regain their lead. Liverpool only salvaged a point in the dying moments when Lewis Hall fouled Viktor Munoz, allowing Dominik Szoboszlai to convert the penalty.
Carragher was particularly troubled by the performance of the midfield trio of Ryan Gravenberch, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Florian Wirtz. Following the first goal conceded, the former defender remarked:
All of Liverpool's midfield is charging forward. This has been happening throughout pre-season. Madness!
After Newcastle's second goal, Carragher reiterated his concerns:
Again! That midfield cannot function effectively. I mentioned this even before the first official match.
His assessment found agreement with Daniel Sturridge. The former Liverpool striker believes the team lacks a traditional defensive midfielder:
If you look at the midfield, they are all more attack-minded players by nature. Liverpool need a holding midfielder, in my view.
Sturridge pointed to Brentford's new signing Mamadou Sangare as an example, citing his stats in tackles, interceptions, and ball recoveries. He emphasised that it isn't just about a specific player, but rather the type of player Liverpool currently lacks.
