Gary Neville believes Arsenal are the clear frontrunners for this season's Premier League title. Following the opening fixtures, the former Manchester United defender expressed unprecedented confidence in identifying the potential champions at such an early stage.
Arsenal kicked off their title defence in style with a commanding 3-0 victory over Coventry. In contrast, Manchester City had to fight back for a late win against Bournemouth, while Liverpool salvaged a draw against Newcastle thanks to a late penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai.
In his analysis, Gary Neville said:
"Arsenal should win the Premier League title this season by a considerable margin. We witnessed defeats for Tottenham and Manchester United, while Liverpool nearly lost, and Manchester City scraped a home win. Arsenal must be brimming with confidence right now. I've never been this sure after the first game week about which team will clinch the Premier League title. Of course, these words could come back to haunt me by the end of the season."
However, Neville surprised many by naming Chelsea—not City or Liverpool—as Arsenal's main competitors:
I think Chelsea will finish second due to their squad, the absence of European competition, and having an excellent manager. They genuinely have a good chance of challenging Arsenal this season.
Despite Manchester City's win over Bournemouth, Neville remained unconvinced:
For Enzo Maresca, starting with a win was crucial as there’s pressure on him. City deserved their victory, but it wasn't straightforward. There are still many questions surrounding the team.
We judge City and Liverpool against the standards they have set in recent years, and both teams are far from that level right now.
The expert was particularly critical of Liverpool, pointing out the issues with Andoni Iraola's squad balance:
They don't look anything near a championship-level team. If you're playing with two wing-backs like that, you need two outstanding centre-backs and two strong defensive midfielders to break up counter-attacks.
Moreover, Isak and Wirtz must start performing at their best. Until now, we've been lenient with them, but it's time they showed results and stepped up their game.
