Michael Owen is anticipating a strong season from Alexander Isak at Liverpool and is convinced the forward is gradually rediscovering the form that led the Reds to splash a record £125 million on him.
Back in August, the former Liverpool striker was considerably more critical. After a challenging first season for Isak, which included a fractured fibula and 106 days sidelined, Owen proclaimed that the Swede was running out of excuses:
We gave him time and understood the circumstances. But then he finished the season, went to the World Cup, completed pre-season — and now you start to think: 'Right, the excuses are running out'.
We need to see the real Isak. We know how good he can be; he was brilliant at Newcastle. But we haven't witnessed that at Liverpool yet.
Following those remarks, Isak responded with three goals in two matches. Although he failed to find the net in the next two games against Atletico and Fulham, Owen's outlook on the 26-year-old's prospects has turned significantly more positive:
He has started the season well. Isak has already scored a few goals and looks sharp. I think he will continue in this vein, have a very good season, and find the back of the net plenty of times.
After injuries, it takes time for a striker, especially one with Isak's style of play, to get back to his best.
So far this season, he looks good. I really like Isak, and he can undoubtedly become a vital player for the club.
Liverpool’s next match sees them face Tottenham in the third round of the League Cup.
