A disappointing start for Florian Wirtz at Liverpool may open the door for his return to Germany, with Bayern Munich once again showing interest in the midfielder.
After turning down a move to Munich last year in favour of a switch to Anfield, the German side is now weighing up a potential transfer as the season draws to a close.
The 23-year-old has struggled to find his best form since his £116 million move from Bayer Leverkusen, and his recent performance against Fulham was a stark reminder that he has yet to live up to the hefty price tag attached to him.
However, this dip in form hasn’t dampened Bayern’s interest, as they are ready to make a move should he be made available at the end of the campaign.
In 2025, Bayern attempted to secure Wirtz’s signature and were willing to splash the cash in an effort to entice him. Ultimately, Wirtz made it clear he preferred Liverpool, a decision influenced by former coach Arne Slot.
Yet, reality has not matched expectations. Slot has since left his position, and Wirtz has failed to find consistency. This season, the German has appeared in five matches, contributing just one assist to the Reds’ cause.
Now, under new head coach Andoni Iraola, the challenge lies in unlocking Wirtz’s potential and ensuring he delivers performances commensurate with his talent. Otherwise, Bayern, who are biding their time, may well be tempted to bring him back to the Bundesliga.
