John Terry believes Estevao is on the verge of securing a spot in Chelsea's starting XI and keeping it for years to come. The former captain of the Blues is impressed with the progression of the 19-year-old winger and is optimistic about his future at Stamford Bridge.
Despite being primarily used from the bench at the start of the season by manager Xabi Alonso, Estevao had a brief cameo in Saturday's 2-2 draw against Hull City, where he saw limited action in the closing minutes.
Terry feels the young talent should have been brought on earlier for a more substantial showing:
He came on for about five minutes, but I think he could’ve been introduced a bit sooner. I would’ve liked to switch Pedro Neto to the left for around ten minutes and see how it plays out.
Estevao looked sharp and impressive. He seems to have bulked up and become stronger. I saw him in the gym recently — it’s clear he's developing physically.
He definitely needs more game time, but right now he’s a fantastic option to come on for 10-15 minutes.
Terry also highlighted Estevao's physical growth following his recovery from an injury that kept him out of the World Cup:
I really like him. He’s dynamic, strong, and has immense potential. Look at him: powerful, extremely quick, and aggressive for someone of his height.
I'm curious to see how his career unfolds at Chelsea. I believe he will continue to progress.
He will surely need more minutes soon, and I think he will get them. As the season progresses, squad rotation will be crucial.
But Estevao strikes me as one of those players who, once he’s in the starting lineup, will be so tough to displace. He’s just that good. A brilliant lad who loves Chelsea, and I believe he’s a future star.
