Manchester United are considering signing Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta in January. The Red Devils aim to enhance their attacking options by bringing in an experienced striker who can compete with Benjamin Sesko.
Mateta is on the radar of United's sporting director, Jason Wilcox, and representatives for the 29-year-old Frenchman have already made contact with the Manchester club. United have had an interest in the forward since as early as 2025.
What particularly appeals to the club is Mateta's Premier League experience. During his time at Crystal Palace, he has netted 62 goals in 203 appearances.
United sought to add another central striker over the summer, but the bulk of their budget was allocated to strengthening their midfield. The team welcomed Andre Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Carlos Baleba, but were unable to secure a new competitor for Sesko.
Now, signing a forward has become a top priority for January. Sesko continues to grapple with injury issues and is currently recovering from a shin injury that has been troubling him since May.
The situation surrounding Mateta makes a winter transfer highly feasible. The Frenchman has long been keen to leave Crystal Palace, and last winter, moves to Milan and Juventus fell through. He has seen just one match this season for the Londoners.
With Mateta's contract up next summer, January will be the last chance for Crystal Palace to earn a fee for him unless an agreement for a new deal can be reached.
The future of Joshua Zirkzee may also play a role here. United are prepared to part ways with the Dutchman in January, with clubs from both England and Italy, including Crystal Palace, showing interest.
This could simplify negotiations between the clubs, although discussions involving both strikers haven’t materialised yet.
For now, United remain focused on the potential signing of Mateta and will keep Crystal Palace's asking price in mind. The player is eager for a move, yet desires to remain in Europe despite interest from Saudi Arabian clubs.
