In a candid assessment of Chelsea's current predicament, former Premier League goalkeeper Asmir Begovic reveals that the Blues stand to gain from their absence in European competitions this season.
The 2025/26 season has been a tough one for Chelsea, finishing a disappointing 10th in the Premier League and missing out on European football altogether after a final-day defeat to Sunderland. That loss saw the Black Cats secure a Europa League spot, leaving Chelsea to focus solely on domestic competitions.
Despite the setback, Begovic contends that a less congested fixture list could afford Chelsea more time and energy to concentrate on domestic cups.
In an interview with Hajper, the Bosnian goalkeeper commended the club's transfer dealings, underscoring the significance of signing players with considerable Premier League experience.
“Chelsea's transfer strategy has noticeably shifted. The hierarchy is once again attracting top talents, having signed established players like Morgan Rogers, Emi Martinez, and Maxence Lacroix. This is what the club has always been known for – striving for victory in every tournament by recruiting the best players for each position,” Begovic stated.
“Bringing in footballers with proven Premier League backgrounds is crucial. In my opinion, it’s smarter to focus on this rather than signing older players solely to bolster the bench who have limited impact on results. Such signings send a strong message. That’s how a club of Chelsea's stature should operate.”
Begovic is also convinced that a reduction in fixtures could open up excellent opportunities for the London side:
“Indeed, the absence of European matches can be a positive aspect. Naturally, everyone wants to play in the Champions League, to experience that glamour and measure themselves against the best in those magical European nights. However, right now, Chelsea can focus on domestic cups and launch a powerful winning run across those tournaments.”
“Looking at the situation through this lens is entirely positive. Once the team returns to Europe, the hierarchy will need to expand the squad to meet the rigorous demands of midweek matches. For such high-stakes encounters and constant travel, quality rotation and options are essential.”
