Head coach Xabi Alonso has admitted that Chelsea are not performing to the necessary standard at the start of the season.
“I have a feeling that the situation will improve, but at this moment, it is simply not enough,” the Spanish manager stated in an interview with Stan Sport.
Alonso pointed out that while there are some positive aspects to the team's play, they must improve in several areas—not just in terms of results but also regarding the quality of football.
The coach particularly highlighted the concerning number of goals conceded.
“There are certain positives and things we can improve. It’s not just about results, but also about the game itself, especially in terms of the goals we've let in,” Alonso explained.
According to the manager, the issue extends beyond defence. He believes that the quality of Chelsea's attacking play directly impacts their ability to defend effectively.
“That is what we want to improve. It's not only about defence—it’s about attack too. How we attack helps us defend,” he elaborated.
Alonso emphasised that many aspects of his squad are still developing.
“Many things are still a work in progress. Throughout this process, there are both positive and negative elements, and we need to become more stable,” he added.
The initial five fixtures of the Premier League have been challenging for Chelsea. Currently sitting in 10th place, the Blues ended this phase of the season with a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brentford.
In these five matches, Chelsea have already conceded 12 goals, with a minimum of two goals leaked in every outing.
