Paul Scholes believes Senne Lammens still has a lot to prove at Old Trafford.
The Belgian goalkeeper joined Manchester United at the end of last summer after Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir fell out of favour.
When United entered the transfer market searching for a new keeper, they even agreed terms with Emiliano Martinez. However, in a surprising twist, they opted for youth over experience, signing Lammens from Antwerp. Since then, Martinez has headed for Chelsea, while Lammens has quickly established himself as the first-choice for the Red Devils.
Undeniably, the 24-year-old represents a significant improvement over his predecessors. Yet fans are starting to wonder if he can develop into a world-class keeper in the coming years. In the Premier League, Lammens has played 36 matches, conceding 46 goals and managing to keep eight clean sheets.
Just look at Liverpool's Alisson or Arsenal's David Raya to see how critical it is to secure a reliable goalkeeper for the long haul.
Lammens finished the 2025/26 season as the best signing in the Premier League, an impressive accolade. However, the start of the new campaign has seen him let in seven goals across four matches, including two each from newly promoted sides Ipswich Town and Hull City.
In the recent derby against Manchester City, he conceded just once but was left with a makeshift defence, featuring only nine outfield players.
Reacting to United's disheartening defeat on the podcast The Good, The Bad & The Football, Scholes stated:
What team have you seen winning the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper?
Maybe Lammens will become one, I don’t know. I think the question over him is still open, and you need to build your game from the back four.
