Liverpool are looking to strengthen a crucial position despite the summer transfer window closing. Free agent Rafael Guerreiro is available, and the Portuguese defender could make an instant impact in Andoni Iraola's starting XI.

Problems on the left flank
One of Liverpool's primary concerns so far this season has been the left-back position.

Guerreiro still without a club
One option that remains available is Rafael Guerreiro.
The 32-year-old Portuguese failed to sign with a new club this summer, despite regularly featuring in the Bundesliga last season.
In the 2025/26 season, Guerreiro made 18 appearances in the German top flight for Bayern Munich.
His experience is also a significant selling point. Over his career, the defender has played for Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, competing at the highest level with 63 Champions League appearances.
Experienced winner
Guerreiro is used to playing in teams that focus on ball possession and positional attacks, making him a good fit for Iraola's requirements.
The Portuguese is not only capable defensively but also actively participates in progressing the ball, creating width in attacks, and joining the final third of the pitch.
Throughout his career, Guerreiro has won:
- two Bundesliga titles;
- three DFB-Pokal trophies;
- the UEFA Nations League;
- and several other national and international honours.
However, his age remains the primary concern. Liverpool are unlikely to view the 32-year-old defender as a long-term solution, but Guerreiro could provide valuable short-term support.
