Ryan Giggs has singled out Martin Odegaard amid Arsenal's impressive start to the new season. The Manchester United legend believes the Norwegian is currently controlling the game and performs a huge amount of work both on and off the ball.
Odegaard has already made a considerable impact following a less than stellar previous season. He found the net in the FA Community Shield, scored against Coventry and Chelsea in the Premier League, and also secured victory for Arsenal over Napoli in the Champions League.
When asked about his favourite player in the current Arsenal setup, Giggs stated:
At the moment, it's Odegaard. I think he controls matches. He receives the ball from defenders, makes himself available behind the opponents.
He’s everywhere! He wins the ball back for the team and works very hard defensively. Yes, right now he looks incredibly powerful.
Giggs also believes that Arsenal possesses everything necessary to defend their title. He was particularly impressed by their victory over Sunderland following a Champions League match:
Defending a championship is tough, so the result and performance against Sunderland showed me they are ready to do so. A trip to Sunderland after a European match isn’t an easy task.
They looked like they controlled the situation. They have a strong squad: it’s possible to make four or five changes without losing quality. Moreover, the team might even become stronger.
According to Giggs, the depth of the squad gives Mikel Arteta the ability to rotate regularly without a drop in quality:
If you want to be a top team, you need two players for every position. It seems Arsenal currently have that situation nearly across the entire squad.
