Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has highlighted that defender Leni Yoro is still very much in a development phase. The boss believes it’s crucial not to impose strict expectations on the young player or demand immediate results at the top level.
Carrick responded to questions from journalists regarding the young footballer's form.
He’s just 20 years old, Leni, you know? And again, in context, he has a fantastic future ahead of him with enormous potential. He’s learning and developing.
Being at this club in the central defender position at such a young age is a tough ask. He can definitely handle it, as can Aiden, but there’s really no cut-off point.
Some players progress and find themselves at a level where they can truly express themselves by the age of 18. Others, like Leni, have shown they can play. I’m not worried about Leni.
I think he’s doing a lot of really good things, and that’s part of the learning process. Sometimes that development might happen at 20, while with other players you might see it at 22, 23, or even 24. So there’s certainly no strict cut-off.
He just needs to keep progressing, moving in the right direction, wanting to learn, and continuing to improve and seize more opportunities.
He’s doing a lot of good things, and I think we need to be careful. I’m certainly not going to make rash decisions based on one game, or one half, or one moment in a match, and we absolutely believe in Leni.
