Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, now plying his trade at Al Nassr, has embarked on a groundbreaking social initiative in his homeland. The Senegalese footballer recently revealed plans for an ambitious agro-industrial complex, valued at 11.7 billion CFA francs (approximately £15 million), in his birthplace of Bambali.
The enterprise, named SM10 Agro, is set to have its foundation stone laid on September 19, with construction expected to last around 18 months.
Designed to transform the agricultural sector in the Casamance region, the project includes establishing a 500-hectare mango plantation that will feature around 78,000 trees. The first harvest is anticipated in roughly three years, with the plantation projected to reach full operational capacity by 2031.
In addition to cultivation, the complex will focus on the deep processing of fruits, with a production capacity of 8,500 tonnes per year. It will produce mango pulp, dried fruits, and mango oil. According to Mane, due to a lack of storage facilities and processing capacity, the Sedhiou region currently loses between 30% and 40% of its mango harvests.
Mane articulated the patriotic mission behind the project, stating:
I want the wealth of our land to stay here, with us.
Initial estimates suggest that SM10 Agro will create over 1,000 direct jobs, with this number potentially rising to 2,500 at peak operational levels. Alongside the production facilities, Mane plans to finance the establishment of an agricultural college and a research centre, providing free training in modern agritech for local youth and women.
