Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has praised 20-year-old Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenky after his unofficial debut in a friendly match against Monaco.
Making his first appearance in the final pre-season clash, Yirenky was quick to grab attention with his active interceptions, high mobility in midfield, and an assist for Luma Chauna.
His transfer from Danish side Nordsjaelland cost Coventry a hefty €27 million, with potential bonuses pushing it to €30 million. This deal set three financial records:
- Coventry City Record: The club's most expensive transfer in history.
- Fourth Record of the Summer: This marks the fourth time this transfer window that the club has raised their own spend benchmark.
- Scandinavian Record: The largest fee ever received by a Scandinavian club for a player (the previous record held by Nordsjaelland when they sold Ernest Nuamah to Lyon for €25 million in 2023).
After the match, Lampard commented:
We have huge faith in Caleb. We’re thrilled to have brought him here. Many European clubs were after him, but we managed to convince him to join our project.
He’s young, talented, and an exceptional player. We believe a great career lies ahead of him. This is a serious boost for us, and we’ve already seen promising signs in the game against Monaco.
For Coventry City, the upcoming season marks their return to the Premier League after 25 years. They will kick off their championship campaign on 21 August away against reigning champions Arsenal.
