Bayern Munich supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has expressed skepticism about the likelihood of the Bavarian club reigniting their pursuit of midfielder Florian Wirtz, following the player's decision to join Liverpool in 2025.
This comes after Bayern made significant efforts to sign the Bayer Leverkusen star during the summer of 2025, but the German international opted for a move to Merseyside instead. In response to questions from AZ regarding the prospect of Bayern returning for the 23-year-old, Rummenigge made it clear that such decisions are made by the sporting hierarchy and noted the fierce competition within the squad:
First and foremost, that's not my job. We must remember that Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry are both playing in that position, along with others like Ismael Saibari. There is no need to buy a fourth player at the kind of price Wirtz would likely command.
Rummenigge further stressed that each player must carefully consider their choices:
Is there a possibility for the future? I don’t know. The key question is whether Wirtz is happy at Liverpool. I can't judge that. Uli (Hoeness) and I had discussions with his parents for a while before they made a different decision, which we respected.
