Former Manchester United player Lee Sharpe is adamant that sacking head coach Michael Carrick will not address the issues plaguing the club. The Red Devils have had a rocky start to the season, securing just one victory from five Premier League outings.
This weekend, United will host Tottenham at Old Trafford, managed by Roberto De Zerbi. Ahead of this crucial clash, Sharpe has leapt to the defence of Carrick.
It’s far too early to be looking at sacking him. You’d just be starting over with another manager who would require different players. I don’t see the point in doing that right now. The hierarchy needs to take some responsibility. Tielemans was a good buy, and Baleba looks like a decent acquisition, but Carrick and the fans were expecting one or three more signings. However, the players have started the season slowly and carelessly, and that needs to change.
Sharpe also pointed out that the team is missing Benyamin Sheshko significantly, noting that the attempted use of Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha in a false nine role has not yielded results.
Furthermore, the former midfielder warned the club's owners, INEOS, about the dangers of falling behind competitors. United remains the only club from the traditional top six that hasn’t splashed over £100 million on a single player.
It’s ridiculous that players are even valued at £100 million, but if that’s the going rate for top-class talent these days, United need to be ready to compete. If they don’t keep pace with the biggest clubs, there’s a genuine risk of falling even further behind.
