Manchester United have suffered a significant setback in their attempts to lure French midfielder Youssouf Fofana to Old Trafford. According to Spanish outlet VamosMiSevilla, the player has firmly rejected any notion of leaving Sevilla in the middle of the season.
Fofana joined the Andalusian club on loan from AC Milan back in the summer of 2026 and has made a stunning impact in his early appearances. Despite United’s hefty investment over the summer to bolster their midfield—having signed Yuri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andre Santos—co-owners INEOS were keen on bringing in more fresh talent for manager Michael Carrick. The club’s sporting department was sold on Fofana’s performances and prepared a lucrative transfer bid for January.
Representatives from Manchester United had reached out to AC Milan with intentions to terminate Fofana’s loan at Sevilla early and secure his services on a permanent basis in early 2027. However, the Frenchman has put the brakes on any negotiations:
Despite the pressure from Old Trafford, Fofana’s unwavering stance halted any movement in the boardrooms. He has no intention of packing his bags mid-season and has already communicated his strong desire to fulfil his commitments to Sevilla.
The midfielder is clearly comfortable in Spain and seems keen on signing a full contract with the Andalusians. Sevilla are equally pleased with Fofana’s influence on the team’s success. Head coach Luis Garcia commented on the unexpected acquisition of the midfielder at the start of October:
It was a completely surprising deal for us that allowed us to make a significant leap in quality. We never expected to acquire a player of such calibre. It was around seven in the evening; I was at the club’s facilities, and if memory serves me well, Fofana was on his way to Lyon. Due to registration complications or something similar, their deal fell through, and he was offered to us.
He was touted to many clubs, and we spent all that was left within our wage ceiling. As soon as the opportunity arose, we didn’t hesitate, as it was originally an unattainable target. Most of his salary is covered by AC Milan, making it a blessing for us. Among all our new signings, he’s the only one whose arrival exceeds our actual financial limitations. It felt like a gift.
