Chelsea have been thrust into the transfer market as they seek a new right-back following a significant injury to captain Reece James, who will be sidelined for around three months after undergoing knee surgery.
When fully fit, the 26-year-old is rightly recognised as one of the best full-backs in Europe. However, persistent injury issues have marred his career. Last season, James managed to feature in 29 Premier League matches (39 across all competitions), finally surpassing the 20-game mark for the first time since the 2021/22 campaign. He had a promising start to the current season, appearing in six matches, but has recently missed games for both the Blues and the England national team during the international break.
The club's medical team confirmed the necessity of surgery:
“Captain Reece James underwent a successful minor operation on his knee. The 26-year-old was absent for Saturday's match against Bournemouth while medical staff conducted assessments. These tests confirmed that surgery was essential. Reece has already begun his recovery journey at the Cobham training base.”
Replacement search and interest in Benfica star
According to TEAMtalk, with the long-term loss of their captain, Chelsea leadership are ready to ramp up their efforts in the transfer market, making an official move for 18-year-old defender Daniel Banjaki from Portuguese side Benfica.
The talented youth product, who has recently started earning first-team appearances, is viewed by the Blues as a priority target as they look ahead to the January window. His contract includes a release clause set at £38 million.
However, Chelsea will face tough competition as other top Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Liverpool, are also reportedly chasing the young talent.
