Liverpool and Scotland icon Kenny Dalglish recently light-heartedly suggested that Andy Robertson should consider retiring from international duty. The jest comes as Robertson inches closer to matching Dalglish's long-standing record for most caps for the national team.
On October 3, 2026, Robertson made his 100th appearance for Scotland, stepping onto the pitch against North Macedonia — a notable milestone that only one other male player in Scottish history has achieved.
The overall record remains with Dalglish, who accrued 102 caps for his country, a feat that has stood since 1986.
In a recent interview with FourFourTwo, the former Liverpool striker responded with humour to the prospect of his historical status being challenged.
Dalglish remarked:
He’s a good lad, and it wouldn’t bother me if he breaks the record.
But I think it’s time for him to hang up his boots. I’ve even told him that!
Since 2018, Robertson has been leading the Scotland squad as captain. He could equal Dalglish's record in the upcoming Nations League matches against North Macedonia and Switzerland.
The defender previously expressed aspirations to surpass the legendary Scot's milestone but emphasized the importance of celebrating his 100th match.
Robertson explained:
I hope I can catch up with Kenny because I want to keep playing and wearing the Scotland shirt for many more years.
But first, I need to enjoy this 100th match. I’m only the second male player in our history to achieve this.
According to Robertson, professional footballers often overlook the significance of their achievements while relentlessly chasing the next target.
He added:
Sometimes we, as footballers, don’t celebrate what we’ve achieved enough. I’ve consciously decided to change that mindset.
I recognise what I’ve accomplished for myself and my family. It was a special night for all of us.
If Robertson continues to perform regularly for the national team, Dalglish's record — which has lasted for four decades — could be overtaken in the near future.
And while the Liverpool legend jokes about Robertson hanging up his boots, he made it clear he would be thrilled to witness a new historical milestone.
