Manchester United are weighing up a few signings in the January transfer window if their performance does not improve. Fabrizio Romano has revealed two key conditions that could trigger winter reinforcements.
According to the journalist, the hierarchy at Old Trafford is ready to be more active in the market if their results continue to disappoint and there are suitable players available to sign.
In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Romano stated:
Many are asking if Manchester United can actively enter the January transfer market given their poor results in the Premier League.
My answer is yes. But under two conditions: if the situation with results does not change, and if suitable players become available on the market.
Over the last two years, United have conducted a significant revamp of their squad. In 2025, the club bolstered their attack by signing Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko. Last summer, their focus shifted to midfield, bringing in Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba, and Andre Santos.
The next area of focus appears to be defence. Initially, the club had planned to strengthen this position in the summer of 2027, but with the current season’s shaky start, this timeline may be accelerated.
Romano highlighted that Manchester United had funds for additional signings even back in August.
The journalist elaborated:
Manchester United had the money to do something else apart from signing three midfielders.
For example, the club could have signed a left-back. It wasn’t about massive amounts, but a certain budget was available.
The problem was that suitable players were not available, so the hierarchy decided to bide their time.
One target for United was Newcastle defender Lewis Hall.
Romano mentioned:
For instance, Manchester United wanted to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle, but he was unavailable. Later, the player signed a new contract.
As such, acquiring a left-back remains a potential avenue for the club in January.
However, United's plans for defensive reinforcements may not stop there.
According to TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are also interested in adding an experienced striker to provide competition for Benjamin Sesko, who has faced ongoing injury issues. One potential candidate is Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace.
Notably, any move for the Frenchman is directly linked to the future of Joshua Zirkzee, as United will only consider bringing in a new forward if the Dutchman departs.
Romano emphasised that it's too early to speculate on the exact number of signings United might make in January.
He concluded:
If suitable opportunities arise and results remain poor, Manchester United will be interested in new signings.
How many players the club could bring in is still uncertain, but the hierarchy will definitely explore options in the January market.
