Manchester United have cancelled the transfer of Joshua Zirkzee to Serie A despite the player's agreement to leave for Napoli. With Benjamin Sesko's recurring injury, Michael Carrick has blocked the forward's exit.

Manchester United have made a sudden decision to cancel the planned departure of forward Joshua Zirkzee during the January transfer window, despite the player's agreement to move to Serie A.

The Manchester club finds itself embroiled in yet another crisis, with the initial excitement surrounding Michael Carrick's appointment having quickly faded. This season in the Premier League, the Red Devils have yet to manage a single clean sheet against their English counterparts, and their latest outing against Tottenham saw them utterly outclassed by a side that had not won a match all season. Questions about the team’s performance are piling up: the defence continues to be riddled with errors, the midfield lacks athleticism and intensity, and the attacking line has been woefully ineffective.

The situation up front, particularly concerning the need for a genuine centre-forward, is dire. Top scorer Benjamin Sesko is struggling with yet another flare-up of a chronic shin injury, while Matheus Cunha has looked lost in a makeshift striker role. Meanwhile, Zirkzee has been actively seeking a change of scenery.

According to Italian outlet AreaNapoli, the 25-year-old forward has already expressed his willingness to return to Serie A in January:

Zirkzee’s name is at the top of Napoli’s wishlist — it's no secret that they are keen on him. The Neapolitan club's sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has devised a strategy with the backing of two unexpected allies from within the Red Devils: former United players Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McTominay, who have been encouraging the ex-Bologna player to make the switch to the Diego Armando Maradona stadium. While Zirkzee has indicated a willingness to return to Italy, he must also consider the strong competition from Juventus.

Zirkzee attempted to leave the club last summer, but United turned down all offers, including a loan move to Everton and interest from Fiorentina before the deadline. Later reports from TEAMtalk suggested that United were ready to let him go in January, contingent on bringing in Jean-Philippe Mateta from Crystal Palace.

Change in United's stance following Spurs match

The situation took a turn after the match against Tottenham. Zirkzee emerged as one of the few bright spots for the Red Devils, and with ongoing injury issues for Benjamin Sesko and an attacking crisis, the club has decided to veto any January transfer.

Journalist Dean Jones highlighted in a column for Flashscore:

Joshua Zirkzee may get another chance at Manchester United. Rumours of his departure have been swirling for nearly a year, and he was the frontrunner for a transfer as the January window approaches. However, the club saw no benefit in parting ways, and now the stakes have risen. Although Zirkzee hasn’t made a start in the Premier League this season, he has appeared in the last three matches. Sources suggest that Carrick maintains his faith in the player and is adamant about not letting Zirkzee leave in the middle of the season—especially now, when the team’s attacking line is in total disarray.
