Kobbi Mainu discusses Manchester United's return to the Champions League after his chat with Clarence Seedorf. The midfielder reminisced about his early debut and highlighted the team's mindset ahead of the match against Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbi Mainu has expressed his excitement over the team's long-awaited return to the Champions League following a meeting with legendary Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf at the club's training base in Carrington.

This enlightening encounter and interview were part of an event hosted by Amazon Prime. United fans have drawn frequent comparisons between the young Englishman and Seedorf, affectionately dubbing Mainu the 'Stockport Seedorf' since he made his debut for the first team in 2023. These parallels stem from Mainu's remarkable calmness under pressure, his decision-making skills in tight spaces, and his tenacity in tackles. However, the 20-year-old remains grounded when facing such high praise likening him to the four-time Champions League winner.

During their conversation, Clarence Seedorf sought to understand Mainu's early steps with the Red Devils and his impressions from playing in European competitions.

"It feels like all of this happened such a long time ago. I know it’s only been a few years, but it truly seems that way because there have been so many events: countless matches and a huge volume of experiences," Mainu reflected.

"To be where we are now... It’s clear our Premier League form could have been better, and we will definitely improve, we will get stronger. But just qualifying for the Champions League, the music before the kick-off, and stepping onto the pitch at Old Trafford is something special.

In my debut season, I had a brief taste of the Champions League. At just 18 years old, I came on as a substitute against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray towards the end of the group stage, and we were knocked out. At that moment, I thought: ‘Oh, I need to feel this again.’ I absolutely must get back under those floodlights and return to that level. So, the feelings right now are just amazing," the midfielder emphasised.

Manchester United will face Atletico Madrid in their second group stage match of the 2026/27 Champions League season on Tuesday, 13 October.
