15-Second Brief
Ten people have been arrested and a police officer sustained serious facial injuries during the Liverpool versus Manchester City match at Anfield. The chaos unfolded amid a scandal regarding financial allegations against the visitors.

Merseyside Police have officially confirmed ten arrests and a serious injury to a police officer during security operations at the Premier League match between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield.

The Sunday clash unfolded in an atmosphere of unprecedented hostility towards the visitors. This was the first meeting of the teams since an independent commission handed down a guilty verdict over 114 financial breaches against the Citizens, a decision that the club has since appealed.

Long before kick-off, hundreds of furious Reds fans surrounded the approaches to the stadium. To avoid direct confrontation with the crowd, Manchester City's team bus had to enter the ground via a side entrance. Once inside the stadium bowl, the City players were subjected to a barrage of deafening boos, offensive chants, and provocative banners throughout the match.

Police statement and officer attack

In an official statement, Merseyside Police revealed the nature of the offences:

The arrests included one person suspected of two counts of assault on a police officer, five for football tragedy chants, one for public intoxication and disorderly conduct, two for being involved in a fight, and one for throwing objects onto the pitch.

At approximately 18:35, as spectators were leaving the stands, a police officer sustained a serious facial injury while detaining an offender on Enfield Road. The injured officer has been taken to hospital for treatment and is currently recovering at home.

Authorities' reaction to speculation around tragedies

Chief Inspector Leanne Hobin harshly condemned the behaviour of offenders referencing football disasters:

Football fans who use chants about tragedies inflict unbearable pain and suffering on the families of those who have lost loved ones. Such behaviour has absolutely no place in football or society.

We will continue to work closely with clubs to identify everyone involved and ensure those responsible are held to account under the law.

I hope that today's arrests send a clear signal and deter others. Anyone who stoops to such despicable behaviour risks being arrested and facing a criminal record.
