18-year-old winger Rio Ngumoa has made a definitive choice about his future, opting for Liverpool despite serious interest from Arsenal. Preliminary agreement has been reached between the Merseyside club and the player, with the formal contract now nearing completion.
Both giants have been keenly eyeing wing positions during the summer transfer window. Champions Arsenal lost Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli but have only added Christos Dziolis to their ranks. Attempts to recruit Morgan Rogers or Vinicius Junior ended in failure, with Rogers heading to Chelsea and the Brazilian extending his contract with Real Madrid.
Liverpool, on the other hand, faced the departure of Mohamed Salah but made key signings in Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz. Cody Gakpo was almost lured away to Tottenham or Manchester City, but the club managed to keep hold of the Dutchman due to collapsed talks regarding a third new winger.
Amidst this transfer tussle is homegrown talent Rio Ngumoa, whom many at Anfield regard as one of the premier prospects in the new generation of English football. Insider Fabrizio Romano noted back in September the Gunners’ sustained interest:
If there's an opportunity to sign Rio Ngumoa in 2027, 2028, or any time beyond, Arsenal will certainly be among the key contenders.
Speculations about the teenager possibly heading to London emerged due to a lack of game time at the season's outset. However, according to TEAMtalk, the player has decided to remain loyal to Liverpool.
Insider Graham Bailey revealed that negotiations have reached a decisive stage:
Sources at Liverpool assert that there are no serious obstacles regarding Rio Ngumoa’s new contract. The Reds are close to finalising a deal that will secure the young star’s future at Anfield amidst interest from Arsenal.
With Ngumoa turning 18 in late August, Liverpool is now legally able to tie him into a long-term contract. Last year, he signed an agreement lasting until 2028—the maximum allowable for a minor. Now, both parties can negotiate a far more extended deal. Minor details remain, but there are no disagreements.
The club's recent management changes have also played a role. Liverpool has completed appointing Julian Ward as the sporting director to replace Richard Hughes. Ward has immediately taken personal charge of the situation, making the renewal of Ngumoa his top priority to eliminate any uncertainty about the young winger's future.
