Chelsea could be on the lookout for a new midfielder this January, and one of the options on Xabi Alonso's radar is Frenkie De Jong, who Barcelona could value at around £50 million.
This past summer saw the Blues overhaul their midfield significantly, bringing in the likes of Jordan Henderson, Valentin Barco, and Morgan Rogers, while the likes of Andre Santos and Enzo Fernandez moved on to Manchester United and Manchester City, respectively.
Despite these changes, Alonso is still exploring options to bolster his midfield.
De Jong has emerged as a potential target.
However, the Dutchman has yet to make an appearance for Barcelona this season, having sustained an injury while representing the Netherlands at the 2026 World Cup qualifying stages.
The Catalan club is optimistic about getting the midfielder back on the pitch this month and do not find themselves in a position where a sale is urgently needed.
Negotiating this deal won't be straightforward. Reports suggest Chelsea have already been informed that a fee of around £50 million would be required.
Moreover, the challenge extends to convincing De Jong himself, as there has been no clear indication from the player that he wishes to leave Barcelona.
