It's been 24 years since Leeds United last triumphed over their fierce rivals Manchester United at home in Elland Road. That memorable victory came in September 2002, with a score of 1-0.
Here’s what the players from that historic starting eleven are up to today:
Goalkeeper and defence
Paul Robinson (Goalkeeper): Leaving the club just two years after that iconic match, he had stints at Tottenham and Blackburn before hanging up his boots in 2017 at Burnley. Today, he’s a regular football pundit on BBC 5 Live.
Ian Hart (Right Back): After moving to Spain to play for Levante and switching between several English clubs, he transitioned into a scouting role at Sports Management International.
Danny Mills (Centre Back): Retiring from playing in 2009, he quickly delved into media work covering matches for BBC 5 Live and talkSPORT, as well as taking up marathon running.
Jonathan Woodgate (Centre Back): Testing his skills in management, he has managed Middlesbrough and Bournemouth, before joining Michael Carrick’s coaching staff at Manchester United.
Dominic Matteo (Left Back): Following a battle with a rare brain tumour in 2019, Matteo stepped away from football to become a motivational speaker and co-owner of a consulting firm.
Midfield
Lee Bowyer (Right Midfielder): Bowyer hung up his boots in 2012 and has since managed Charlton, Birmingham, and the Montserrat national team.
Olivier Dacourt (Central Midfielder): After a successful spell in Italy with Roma and Inter, he now serves as an expert analyst for the French television channel Canal+.
Nic Barmby (Central Midfielder): Barmby went on to manage Hull City and was an assistant at Scunthorpe.
Harry Kewell (Left Midfielder): Following a controversial move to Galatasaray and stints in Australia, Kewell launched his coaching career, managing teams in England and Japan, and from 2025, the clubs in Uruguay and Vietnam’s Hanoi.
Attack
Alan Smith (Forward): His move to Manchester United in 2004 stirred up a whirlwind of emotions. Following that transition, Smith played for Newcastle, MK Dons, and Notts County, before relocating to the USA where he now coaches at the XL Soccer World academy.
Mark Viduka (Forward): The man who scored the winning goal left football to settle in Zagreb, where he opened his own coffee shop, embracing a quieter life away from the bustling stadiums.
