Newcastle risk losing one of their key players in the upcoming January transfer window. Negotiations to extend Joe Willock's contract have hit a deadlock, and the club could put the midfielder up for sale.
The 27-year-old Englishman has made an impressive start to the season, netting two goals in six Premier League matches.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle has a high opinion of Willock and is keen to keep him at St James' Park. The club's hierarchy had also hoped to strike a new deal with the player.
Yet, according to reports from the Newcastle Chronicle, both sides remain far from a compromise.
Willock's current contract runs until the summer of 2027. If an extension cannot be agreed upon, the midfielder will be able to negotiate with overseas clubs for a free transfer at the end of the season as early as January.
To avoid this scenario, Newcastle may consider selling the midfielder during the winter transfer window.
However, a final decision has yet to be made. The club is still interested in extending his contract, but the lack of progress in negotiations poses a growing threat to Willock's future.
Thus, the coming months could prove pivotal for the future of the Englishman at St James' Park.
