Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is insisting that the club hierarchy allocate 120 million euros for the acquisition of two Barcelona players during the January transfer window. Following a mixed start to the Premier League campaign, where the Blues have recorded three wins, one draw, and two losses in six matches, the team is facing a pressing shortage of players in key positions. Despite summer expenditures of over 300 million pounds and the signing of Morgan Rogers, the coaching staff remains dissatisfied with the overall depth of the squad.
Spanish media reports suggest Alonso is keen to invest in French defender Jules Kounde and Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The transfer of 28-year-old Kounde has become a priority after Chelsea captain Reece James was ruled out for an extended period following a minor knee operation. The Frenchman has struggled to secure a regular starting spot for Barcelona under Hansi Flick, making him a potential target for the Blues. Reports indicate that Chelsea is prepared to offer up to 55 million euros for the defender, a figure that could persuade Joan Laporta and Deco to let him go.
Alonso addressed the situation regarding James' injury:
We are all disappointed, especially for him. He wanted to start well after the international break, but he picked up an injury in the last training session. We were cautious and waited for the results of the examination. Now that the operation has gone well, we will continue to support him. He will be around the team, as he has a huge influence even when he can't play. We wish him a speedy recovery, and while we are not setting precise timelines, he will miss several weeks. He is incredibly proud to play for this club. His teammates respect him immensely, and he has everyone's backing.
Meanwhile, the club is also actively pursuing the transfer of Frenkie de Jong. Alonso was extremely frustrated with the hierarchy allowing Enzo Fernandez to move to Manchester City on the final day of the summer transfer window without signing a proper replacement. The Dutch international has also been made available by Barcelona, with a starting asking price of 65 million euros. Overall, Barcelona could potentially raise 120 million euros for two players who are not integral to Hansi Flick’s current system.
