Financial expert Kieran Maguire has explained the sharp rise in transfer market prices in the Premier League for summer 2026. Key factors include the arrival of new managers at five 'big six' clubs, Champions League revenues, and intra-league deals.

Financial expert Kieran Maguire has provided insights into why Premier League clubs are digging deep into their pockets for transfers this summer. According to him, a unique confluence of circumstances has driven this trend.

Maguire spoke on BBC Radio 5 Live:

There is definitely serious inflation in the market. We witnessed record spending last season, but I believe that the summer of 2026 has brought together a unique set of circumstances.

The expert noted significant managerial changes among leading English clubs:

Five clubs from the so-called 'big six' have new head coaches. For them, this is their first transfer window, and they are trying to build teams and squads in line with their footballing vision. This requires substantial expenditure.

Another reason highlighted by Maguire is the unprecedented representation of English clubs in the Champions League:

For the first time, we have six teams in the Champions League, and the financial rewards for participating in the tournament are substantial.

Additionally, he pointed out the surge in transfers occurring between Premier League clubs themselves:

This summer, a much larger proportion of deals are happening between Premier League clubs. Money flows to the selling club, which they can then spend on new players, creating a ripple effect across the entire market.
