Jamie Carragher has voiced his outrage at Everton fans who jeered goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after he sustained a significant injury from a collision with defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
The former Liverpool defender was appalled by the supporters' behaviour, asserting that competitive rivalry should never excuse such actions.
“They should hang their heads in shame. It's absurd. Where's our humanity? Put aside the rivalry, I just can't comprehend such behaviour,” Carragher stated.
“I've never seen such a shameless reaction”
The pundit also highlighted his confusion as to why fans continued to boo a player lying motionless on the pitch after the incident.
“I've never seen such a disgraceful act from fans. I just don't understand why they would boo a player who’s seriously injured and not moving,” Carragher added.
In an emotive part of his commentary, he described the crowd's response as outrageous.
“He's fighting for his life, and they're booing him? It's simply ridiculous,” he asserted.
What happened in the match
The incident involving Martinez and Branthwaite occurred during the game between Everton and Chelsea, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the London side. The goalkeeper required lengthy medical attention before being stretchered off the pitch.
Later, Xabi Alonso confirmed that, to his knowledge, Martinez left the stadium conscious and was undergoing tests at the hospital.
