Gary Neville is optimistic about Chelsea's chances this season, believing they are capable of finishing second in the Premier League. The former Manchester United defender has labelled third place as the minimum expected result for Xabi Alonso’s side.
The Londoners kicked off the season well with two wins, but suffered a setback against reigning champions Arsenal at the Emirates, losing 2-1. Despite the defeat, Neville was impressed byChelsea's performance.
Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast, Neville said:
I think they can finish second. Third place is the lowest I see Chelsea achieving. If you had told me this a year ago, I wouldn't have believed you. At that time, the team was nowhere near where they needed to be, and I couldn't see the direction of the project.
Xabi Alonso stated before the match that the project is in its early stages, and that's certainly the case. He’s trying to bring in experience to the squad, and I believe that’s the right direction.
I feel more positive about Chelsea than I have in the last three, four, or five years because I think the club is moving in the right direction.
Neville also highlighted the central midfield partnership of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia while expressing concerns over their ability to stay injury-free throughout the season. He labelled Caicedo as an outstanding player and emphasised the importance of Reece James’ fitness.
According to Neville, even the loss to Arsenal can serve as a source of confidence for the team:
It's not ideal—they lost because Arsenal are a very strong side. But I think Chelsea did almost everything they could in that match. They can go home and realise that even from such a defeat, confidence can be gained.
After three matches, Chelsea sit in fourth place in the table. They will look to bounce back in their next Premier League match against Hull City.
