Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has heaped praise on Martin Odegaard after Arsenal's 2-1 triumph over Chelsea. The Norwegian netted the winning goal, helping the reigning champions secure their third win on the bounce to kick off the season.
Speaking on Viaplay, Schmeichel said:
My word, how good is he? In my view, he was the best player on the pitch.
What this lad does for the team is simply impressive. Technically, he is incredibly gifted. He sees things that no one else does.
Take him out of Arsenal's lineup, and it's hard to imagine what would happen. I don't think any other team in England has a player of his calibre.
Schmeichel also highlighted the intensity of Mikel Arteta's side, noting that when they lose possession, it feels like an additional player appears on the field:
No other team has such work ethic, and it's so well organised. It's one thing to build a system, but another to have the energy to maintain it. Even after substitutions, nothing changes.
Odegaard struck the winning goal just five minutes into the second half. Chelsea had taken the lead in the second minute through Morgan Rogers, before Kai Havertz levelled the score before half-time.
