15-Second Brief
A review of the longest winning streaks in Premier League history. The record of 18 matches is held by Liverpool (2019-2020) and Manchester City (2017).
Manchester City have made an impressive start to the new season with seven consecutive wins, reminding us of their ability to churn out winning runs. However, Pep Guardiola's side still has a distance to cover to reach the absolute records of the tournament. Most of the winning streaks in Premier League history have invariably led to league titles, with rare exceptions like Liverpool's near misses.
Here’s a complete list of the longest winning streaks in Premier League history:
12 wins in a row
- Manchester United (2000): The oldest streak in the top 10. Sir Alex Ferguson's team extended their lead from four to 18 points and continued the run into the next season until it was halted by Ipswich Town (1-1).
- Manchester City (2021/2022): This run began in November with a victory over Manchester United (2-0) and ended in January with a draw against Southampton (1-1), allowing the Cityzens to edge Liverpool by just one point in the title race.
13 wins in a row
- Chelsea (2016): After a defeat to Arsenal (0-3), Antonio Conte switched to a three-at-the-back formation, leading to a 13-match winning streak that saw the Blues rise from eighth to first place, opening up a five-point gap.
- Manchester City (2024): This streak spanned the end of the 2023/24 season (eight consecutive wins to clinch the title) and the first four matches of the following campaign.
14 wins in a row
- Arsenal (2002): The run started at the end of the championship season 2001/02 and continued into the autumn. Despite a draw with West Ham, these performances convinced Arsene Wenger that his team could go a season unbeaten.
15 wins in a row
- Manchester City (2019): Amid a title race with Liverpool, who won 17 matches in a row, City had to claim victory in the last 14 fixtures of the season before winning their opening match of the next championship.
17 wins in a row
- Liverpool (2019): Jurgen Klopp's side won their last nine matches of the 2018/19 season (amassing a record total of points for a second-placed team) and continued the run with eight consecutive wins at the start of the new season.
18 wins in a row
- Liverpool (2019-2020): Building on their success, Liverpool set an all-time record with a 19-point lead and secured the earliest championship in Premier League history (seven games to spare).
- Manchester City (2017): Guardiola's side delivered an 18-match run of demolitions (including victories of 5-0 over Liverpool, 6-0 over Watford, and 7-2 over Stoke City), finishing with a record 100 points in a historic season.
