Manchester United are set to undertake a significant transformation of their defensive unit in 2027, with plans to offload at least two key first-team players.
The summer transfer window of 2026 proved surprisingly quiet for the club. Under Michael Carrick's management, they brought in three midfielders but failed to bolster their defence.
This lack of activity drew a wave of criticism, particularly after Lisandro Martinez publicly expressed his frustration following a defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, a move for which he faced disciplinary action.
According to iNews, the club’s hierarchy has since acknowledged Martinez’s concerns, prompting scouts to embark on a comprehensive redesign of the backline.
Leading the wishlist is Lewis Hall from Newcastle, with the club also showing keen interest in Adrien Truffert from Bournemouth.
As the current season winds down, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, and Lisandro Martinez will see their contracts expire, although the club holds options to extend all three deals for an additional year.
It is anticipated that Martinez’s contract will be renewed solely to facilitate a future sale, with Atletico Madrid reportedly keen on his services.
Luke Shaw, meanwhile, could depart as a free agent since his salary doesn't align with the new INEOS structure. Unless he agrees to a substantial pay cut, a stay in Manchester looks unlikely.
Conversely, Harry Maguire is expected to remain at the club, despite being in the twilight of his career.
