Young Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has made history by becoming the youngest player ever to don the gloves for the Blues in a Premier League match. This impressive milestone was confirmed following his starting debut, which saw him break a long-standing record that had been in place at Stamford Bridge for more than 20 years.
At the time of his debut in a away clash against Everton at Goodison Park, Penders was just 21 years and 78 days old. He surpassed the previous club record held by Lenny Pidgley, who debuted for the club at the age of 21 years and 90 days back in 2005.
This breakthrough moment was necessitated by injury problems within the London club, as Penders was called up to the first team after number one keeper Emi Martinez was sidelined. Chelsea officially recognised this historic achievement, emphasising that for the young player, it's not merely a statistic but a significant milestone in gaining invaluable experience at the highest level.
Breaking such a long-standing record opens a new chapter in the club's modern history, known for its faith in young talent. With the record now firmly in his grasp, Penders will aim to build on this landmark success, continuing his development and fighting for a place as a key player in the Blues' first team at Stamford Bridge.
