Arsenal are weighing up a move for Atletico Madrid winger Alex Baena this January. According to FootballTransfers, the London club has added the 25-year-old Spaniard back to their transfer targets list.
During the previous transfer window, the Gunners were on the hunt for a forward to bolster their attack. They even entertained the idea of a costly switch for Vinicius Junior from Real Madrid, but in the end, Mikel Arteta's side only managed to bring in Christos Tsolis.
Despite a strong start to the season in both the Premier League and Champions League, Arsenal are still actively looking for ways to enhance their squad. Sources from FootballTransfers in Spain suggest that Baena has emerged as one of the prime candidates for a move in the winter.
Why Arsenal are interested in Baena
The Gunners have shown previous interest in Baena earlier this year before he made his move from Villarreal to Atletico. At that time, he was viewed as a potential fit for a role similar to that of Bukayo Saka on the right flank. However, Baena has found himself playing less frequently in that position for the Madrid side.
Baena has made an impressive start to the current season, having already netted five goals and provided three assists across all competitions, including a goal against Manchester United in the Champions League.
Atletico's head coach Diego Simeone has also praised the player's development since the World Cup.
“Baena sees the game differently from others. He has become stronger and more confident since the World Cup. He’s the exact player we wanted to sign. We will have to manage his playing time correctly so that his unique qualities can shine,” said the Argentine manager.
Baena fits the profile of the player that Arteta and director of football Andrea Berta are seeking. Berta, familiar with the Spanish market from his 12 years at Atletico, knows the potential that Baena can bring.
While Baena primarily operates as a winger, he is versatile enough to play in various roles. Last season, he gained playing time not only on the flanks but also in central midfield and as a centre-forward.
Another advantage could be his familiarity with Spain teammates David Raya, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino, which would likely ease his transition to London.
Atletico may demand over €42.6m
The main challenge for Arsenal will be persuading the Madrid club to part ways with one of their key players.
During the summer, Atletico showed a readiness to fiercely defend their position in the transfer market, having refused to let Julian Alvarez leave despite serious interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Simeone's high valuation of Baena underlines his importance to the team.
According to Estimated Transfer Value, the Spaniard is estimated to be worth €42.6m—close to what Atletico paid for him. However, should Arsenal make a concrete offer, the Madrid club may demand significantly more, especially given that January transfers often come at a premium.
