Atletico Madrid is edging closer to finalising a deal for Tottenham's 28-year-old central defender and captain Christian Romero, having struck a personal agreement on a four-year contract with the player.
The Argentine has previously informed the Spurs hierarchy of his desire to seek a new challenge. Atletico has managed to lure him away from Inter, who had met Spurs’ asking price of £38 million but failed to reach an agreement with the defender over wages.
Factors in the negotiations: Simeone and financial terms
Romero has long expressed a wish to work under fellow countryman Diego Simeone, a factor that has proven pivotal in the negotiations.
Financially, the defender has accepted a salary comparable to what he currently earns in London, removing the primary obstacle to the transfer.
As for Tottenham’s stance, the North London club remains firm, insisting on the £38 million fee, which Atletico is now poised to meet.
Cleansing the budget for a smooth transfer
To free up space on their wage bill and financial resources, Atletico is hastening the departures of several players.
Left-back Matteo Ruggeri is reportedly close to a move to Aston Villa for £22 million, where he will replace Lucas Digne who is heading to PSG. Meanwhile, right-back Nahuel Molina is in advanced talks with Roma, which would allow Atletico to finalise their deal for Romero.
