Alan Shearer has issued a stark warning to Arsenal, suggesting that a repeat of their performance against Brighton could be detrimental to their title defence. The Gunners endured their first defeat of the season, falling to a 0-3 loss on the road.
Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas struck in the first half, with Chema Andres adding a third after the break.
Shearer remarked:
They were completely outplayed. It could have been six or seven.
The all-time Premier League top scorer also dissected a moment involving Declan Rice, who picked up a yellow card for a late challenge on Malika Yalkuye.
Shearer commented:
That was an expression of frustration from Rice. Yalkuye gives him a slight push, and I think the referee made the right call showing a yellow card.
I don’t believe it was overly aggressive; he wasn’t trying to hurt his opponent. So the referee’s decision was justified. But that incident somewhat summed up Arsenal’s day.
However, Shearer doesn’t believe panic is warranted after their first setback of the season.
The former striker added:
I would say there’s no need for panic. After five matches last season, Arsenal had ten points. This season, they’ve got twelve.
But they can’t afford for performances like this to happen again. At least not too often.
Danny Murphy also laid into Arsenal, highlighting Brighton’s performance level.
Murphy stated:
Arsenal were outclassed in every department. I must say, I haven’t seen a team play against Arsenal like that in a long time.
Since the start of last season, no team has made as many high turnovers as Brighton. And it’s not a coincidence—I’ve covered three of their matches this season, and they’ve played like this every time.
It’s brave football. Fans love it, and Brighton will cause problems for many teams this season.
