Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero has lifted the lid on intriguing details from the recent transfer campaign. The Argentine revealed that the Citizens were keen on a stunning transfer for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo but chose to focus their efforts on securing Enzo Fernandez instead.
At the close of the summer window, the Merseysiders demanded around £85 million for the Netherlands international, but ultimately managed to keep him at Anfield. Meanwhile, City directed all their resources towards signing Fernandez, splashing out a staggering £125 million to bring him on board.
In an interview with Stake, Aguero explained the rationale behind both Premier League giants' decisions:
Keeping quality players is always a plus. Sometimes a player can feel out of sync with the manager or the club, and then they are eager to move on. But if Gakpo is comfortable with his coach and understands the requirements, it is vital for Liverpool to hold onto him. Liverpool are an incredibly difficult opponent, especially at Anfield. It was good for the Merseysiders to retain such a talent. I believe City were waiting until the end because of the Enzo transfer. The price was massive, and the hierarchy had to make a choice: either Enzo or Gakpo. In the end, they preferred to sign Enzo.
Aguero also weighed in on Liverpool's big offensive signing, Bradley Barcola, who arrived for approximately £123 million:
No one has it easy in the Premier League, but he has the potential to develop into a top player. In fact, he is already a well-formed talent, but it's about becoming one of the best in the league. He possesses the necessary qualities. Much will depend on Liverpool's league standing and their championship challenge. The pressure is immense, but he is a brilliant footballer, that much is clear.
