Alan Shearer believes Manchester United need another central striker to elevate their game. The former England forward also pointed out Michael Carrick's team’s defensive frailties after their 2-0 loss to Hull City.
Footballing legend Alan Shearer shared his thoughts:
I think to step up to the next level, United need another striker. In my opinion, they are not strong enough defensively, but they also lack a player in that central forward role.
Clearly, Sesko wasn't fully ready. He came on in the second half and missed a couple of good chances. But I truly believe that to make the next step, they might need another central striker.
Though the same can be said for many clubs. The big question is — where do you find such a striker?
In their opening match, United failed to score against a newly promoted team. Shearer believes Carrick's side lost to Hull due more to their lack of intensity and mentality:
It felt to me that they just turned up in Hull expecting to win. But when you play away against a team fresh from promotion, especially in the first game of the season, the bare minimum you should do is match their work rate and attitude.
Manchester United didn’t do that from the first minute, and that’s why they deserved to lose. It was a humiliating defeat.
Now they have the perfect match — or perhaps the most challenging one. Another newly promoted side, but this time at home. I expect a different attitude, a different result, and a completely different performance.
