Ashley Cole recalls his controversial transfer from Arsenal to Chelsea in 2006. The former defender admits the decision wasn't easy, but his hunger for trophies ultimately proved stronger.
In an interview with BIG PETE, Cole shared with Petr Cech that he left the club he had supported since childhood:
I left a place I loved. But big players were leaving the team, and I acted selfishly. I wanted to keep winning trophies.
When I arrived at Chelsea, I was like a beast. People hated me, my personal life was a madness, so I just needed to win. I had no other option.
Winning was my only reward for everything I went through. Every match was driven by my desire to lift silverware.
Cole also reminisced about the legendary 2003/04 season when Arsenal went unbeaten in the league, as well as his interplay with Thierry Henry and Robert Pires:
No one taught us this; it came naturally. Thierry would drift wide, Robert would move into the centre, and we formed a triangle. My job was simple: pass to Thierry or Robert and then charge forward.
We knew how strong we were.
